LIFE AT THE ESTATE
As we saw the sure arrival of summer this month with soaring temperatures, the focus on the estate has been on the perpetual task of watering. With a vast variety of thirsty wildlife, blooming gardens and rolling lawns to quench, the team here at Peplow have been dedicated to maintaining the health of the estate by keeping everywhere well watered from dawn until dusk. The water that sustains the estate comes from old wells and bore holes and is delivered to the grounds via irrigation, bowsers and by hand. Watch this space as we explore future solutions for water storage, irrigation improvement and sympathetic planting techniques to ensure that life on the estate continues to flourish.
FROM THE KITCHEN GARDEN
At first glance you might mistake our delicious raspberries for having not yet ripened but we can vouch that the uniquely sweet golden variety is delicious, ripe and ready for enjoying. Curiously, the yellow hue fools birds into avoiding the fruit, leaving more for our guests to forage. We have also begun to harvest our impressive courgettes ready for vibrant summer salads or chargrilling on the barbeque. We adopt all natural gardening here at Peplow and our kitchen garden is no different with all produce being grown on an organic basis. When you stay with us, you can gather your very own harvest of fresh fruit and vegetables to relish. All donations go to the Alzheimer’s Society, a wonderful £600 was proudly raised last year.

A treasure trail of roses awaits, from the walled garden, to the sunken garden as you wander around the grounds the unmistakable David Austin roses are giving us a stunning display of abundant blooms to find and admire. With vibrant colours and sweet floral scents, you can discover The Country Parson, Lady of Shalott, Blush Noisette and Shropshire Lass. Even the latest Sir David Beckham rose can be found nestled at home here in our heritage English garden. Conclude your quest beneath the blanket of delicate pink and white roses that drape over the grand pergola, planted by Lord and Lady Newborough and still thriving beautifully today.

HISTORY CORNER
Our tranquil lake is a haven for local wildlife and maintaining the environment and water levels is of utmost importance. As a through-flow lake, sluice gates are situated where the River Tern meets the lake and where it leaves to regulate water level and flow rate. One of which is Victorian and dates back to the 19th century. This month, the lake levels became very low which called for an inspection of the two sluice gates. A closer inspection found a fault that was restricting the water flow into the lake which was swiftly rectified. After careful monitoring, the levels are back up to where they need to be and the wildlife are showing their gratitude with both their presence and joyful chatter.
EXPERIENCE OF THE MONTH
We have recently announced a very exciting collaboration with the prestigious Heaven Skincare.
